Referenced Theo. Expressions
Introduction
The
Referenced Theo. Expressions (
RTE) material posted below lists over 30,000 words and expressions as they have been found to be rendered in the Chinese publications.
The following are included for each expression:
- The Simplified and Traditional Chinese characters
- The Mandarin Pinyin and Cantonese Yale romanizations (Sidney Lau in the Compact PDF)
- The English meaning
- A reference to a Chinese publication where the expression appeared, sometimes with additional notes

PDF Link Navigation and Annotation
The PDF file is named with “LN-A” (“Link Navigation-Annotation”) to show that it has bookmark links and annotation support. (This is not the case with the Compact PDF file, since that is meant only for printing, and some print bureaus don't like having extra links in PDFs.)
Downloading and Opening PDF Files
To download the files on a PC or a Mac:
- Click on the desired link. Your browser should automatically ask you where to save the file on your disk. (In the very unlikely event that this does not work, right-click on the link and select Save Link As..., or Save Target As..., or Download Linked File As..., or something similar depending on your browser, and save the file to a selected location on your hard drive or USB stick or whatever.)
The Portable Document Format (PDF) file can be opened using the Adobe Reader program, version 6 or above, although I recommend that you use the latest version. This program is free to download, and it runs on a variety of platforms, including Macs. (Mac OS X’s Preview program may be used as well.) This button links to the download page for Adobe Reader:

- tap the file to select it,

- then navigate to your target folder and
- tap the Move 1 item here button on the lower right.

RTE online, and offline HTML
The online lookup form can be used to look up Referenced Theo. Expressions information by English (e.g. circuit overseer), by Romanization (without tones), or by Simplified or Traditional Chinese characters. The pronunciations in the results are rendered as links that play computer-generated audio for the pronunciations when clicked. Your browser's Back button can be used to return to previous pages.
For the offline HTML format, lookups are by English, or by Pinyin without tones.
RTE Updates
RTE is updated from time to time with new additions and corrections. You can ensure you are using the latest version by using it online, or by checking that the date given in the introduction of your offline file matches the date at the top of this page. (If your offline file does not have an introduction, as must be the case with some of the formats RTE uses, you can usually get this information by looking up the word "RTE".)
If you have an RSS news reader, you can add this page's RSS feed (link works only with RSS readers) if you wish to be notified of updates using this method. A variety of RSS readers are available for computers and mobile phones, and besides following this page they can also follow the society's "what's new" and magazines feeds.
Do not rely on the "Feedly" site for this: it's notoriously unreliable at updating feeds, including RTE's.
